ALAN Jones, the radio grand poobah who thinks his time is more precious than Julia Gillard's, has a March 28 deadline and he'd better not be late. Jones (pictured) is one of 150 Aussies approached by Twinings to create an "Australian afternoon tea blend" that will be judged by tea tsar Stephen Twining and released next Australia Day. Indefatigable senior socialite Lillian Frank will also mix a brew, a likely cross between a Toorak frothy pavlova and coconutty lamington. Among the luminaries to accept the stirring challenge are designer Bettina Liano, TV heads Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Mike Munro, Triple M's Mieke Buchan, Denise Drysdale and her Circle gals. Entries will be whittled down to five and the winning brew will go on sale. Twinings master blender Michael Wright has come Down Under for the first time and, while he actually likes Vegemite, he may not be keen to taste it in a relaxing cuppa. Wright has been a taste-tester for 22 years and samples a staggering 600 cups a day, but, being a proper English gent, he said: "We still have a tea break."
