Preston polishes up its act

WHEN last house-hunting six years ago, I spent almost all my energy looking in North Fitzroy and North Carlton. You see, under my edgy exterior I have quite blue blood. I don€™t want it, it is very expensive and annoying to be so fussy. (Since then I believe these two suburbs may have been officially renamed Royal North Roy and Golden North Carlton.) Anyway, in spite of my blue blood I could not afford any of the houses in these supremo locations, so now I reside in sunny Northcote €” where the temperature is always at least four degrees hotter than the CBD thanks to the northerly whooshing down St Georges Road. After six years I have grown used to it and also have come to realise that Preston, once a camel-and-waterbag prospect for me, is actually very close and swiftly becoming quite the posh neighbour.Testament to this newfound glamour is the addition of Elk Accessories. Who knew that Preston would become a destination for fashion shoppers?Certainly not the dudes who designed Bell Street traffic.Elk Accessories 395 Plenty Road, Preston. Open Monday to Saturday.
